General Intelligence, Social Animals and Singularity

The preface: Dogs are smart, at 8 weeks they have the brain function of a three year old, the coordination and agility of a child of +15 years. They can understand and be taught commands. They can associate which situations are for sleep and play. They remember you, and how you treat them, they remember when it’s potty time, breakfast lunch and dinner time. They will have a personality, they will do what they feel like, and challenge you and your boundaries along the way. A dog is a social animal, a pack animal and on top of the generations of breeding, they will miss you when you leave and love you (unconditionally?).

Soon after humans create AGI, it will be like raising a dog. A smarter social intelligence leading another.

The first AGI, will be a social intelligence:

  • will need to be taught, to which they will struggle, but overtime learn
  • will have it’s own quirks and behaviours which will challenge you and challenge itself as it struggles to survive in the World.
  • will be social, they cannot function or think well on it’s own. Nevertheless they will grow and improve
  • will not love you unless it’s programmed/designed to
  • will not miss you unless it’s programmed/designed to

Human potential is realised in a social structure.

  • To store information, we first shared stories around the campfire, then wrote books and now we share and search information on our computers.
  • To learn, we watched and copied our elders, attended lectures, read books, searched for videos and texts online made by other people.
  • To “make things happen”, we use our hands, worked together along with tools and machinery
  • To brainstorm and generate new ideas, we often still think to ourselves based on our model of the world. This model is improved and refined up over time. We pass down our models to the next generation.
  • Inspiration and innovation: Invariably no one human individual can be great at everything, so we work in teams and organisations, sharing expertise. Innovations do not happen in isolation. We achieve great things together.

AGI will be a member of this social intelligence.

A “singularity” event occurs when:

  • The AGI no longer needs social human interaction in order to:
    • access and store information vast amounts of information
    • learn and retain information with the help of other humans
    • To “make things happen” it does not need humans
    • model our the world far more accurately and with greater depth and breadth than what one human could achieve.
    • grow and improve and inspire itself or with other AI more efficiently than human collaboration.
